In light of one of the opinion columns that appeared in the Alligator on Wednesday, Islam on Campus would like to clarify its views on the article, “Accent is rife with corruption.”
I am grateful to be part of an institution where students question apparent corruption and cronyism in organizations intended to represent them.
After living in Gainesville for three months, I can say without equivocation that the bus system here is an utter failure. I cannot count how many times the bus drivers and the website have failed me. Apparently, I live in a Bermuda Triangle of bus scheduling. One morning a particular bus comes at 8:40. Another, it’s not there until 9:05 a.m. How could a schedule have a 25-minute window of error? When their website tells me I have 15 minutes to get to my stop, that means the bus will fly by in five with me standing 10 yards away and the driver being too rude to wait for me. Their refusal to pick up customers, I feel, has little to do with their desire to follow the letter of some rule. Something has to change with this system.
I recently became an avid biker after a church friend gave me a bike. I used to bike everywhere on campus and in town when I was a University of Florida student in the 1970s. Some streets around town don’t even have a bike lane.
I just would like to say great job for having Michael Beato write a weekly column for the Alligator.
In response to the Alligator’s editorial “Get your own fries with that” on Oct. 17:
Some may already know my story, but I was one of the first patients to be treated at Ocala Regional Medical Center’s trauma center when it opened. I had a splenic artery aneurysm and died twice before the excellent doctors at Ocala revived me and saved my life. Back in June I wrote about my story for the Saint Peters Blog, pleading to keep Ocala’s trauma center open. Another publication’s article by Capt. Gail Lazenby of The Villages Public Safety Department about the 1st District Court of Appeals’ decision putting Ocala in danger of closing made me feel the need to write again.

As a UF student, I remained puzzled as to why, after more than a year of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals being in existence, the university has not acted on implementing it at the university.

After reading about GPD’s anti-jaywalking initiative in the Alligator, I took care to legally cross the street before my weekly trip to Chipotle Mexican Grill.

In response to Richard Vieira’s article on U.S. intervention, I wish to reiterate that self-determination for the Syrian people doesn’t equate to a regime change by the U.S. or any other foreign government.

I am a 2005 graduate of UF and a proud Gator. As a former member of the Student Senate, a former officer of the Indian Students Association, an honors ambassador and a member of Savant UF, I recall organizing and participating in many activities on and off campus to raise awareness of issues we believed needed attention.
Thanks to its long connection to famed linguist and author Noam Chomsky, a renowned speaker to worldwide audiences, the Civic Media Center was able to give UF’s ACCENT Speaker’s Bureau a chance to present professor Chomsky on the UF campus this Fall. In 2003, with ACCENT co-sponsorship, Chomsky spoke at the O’Connell Center to 6,000 people.
