Cultural Spotlight: Photoshop me beautiful

We live in a world where beauty sells. Movies, magazines and social media revere beautiful people and younger generations stress over having a “hot” face and body. We all have our own idea of what we consider beautiful, but does our perception of beauty differ from that of other countries? I recently came across an interesting article called “See What Happens When a Woman Asks Photoshoppers in Different Countries to 'Make Her Beautiful'” by Nate Jones that highlighted an important point: the idea of beauty differs from culture to culture. What may be considered beautiful in the United States might not be beautiful in Morocco or Indonesia.

Period drama ‘The Immigrant’ opens at the Hipp with ironic take on American Dream

What is the American dream? Does it matter how we achieve it? How far can one go before they are unredeemable? These are all questions James Gray’s The Immigrant expects the audience to grapple with. Whether you find answers is not the film’s problem. The director James Gray is content to let the viewer come to their own decisions, which is both a weakness and strength for the film.

Remembering a friend, a bet and the 2010 World Cup

I was reminded of 2010 a few nights ago. My memory was thrown back there thanks to an article in The Atlantic about friends who have died, yet still live through Facebook. It is an interesting take on a phenomenon that is now all too real for our ultra plugged-in generation of millennials, including myself. The story prompted me to read back through wall posts and messages of a friend I’d lost, and that brings me to where this summer intersects with that one.

Truck drivers need a chimney sweep

A bizarre and nearly inexplicable trend is spreading across the country, and it’s destined to deal a blow to progressives and environmentalists throughout the U.S. It’s known as rolling coal, and it might the dumbest protest movement in the history of our great nation.
