Fast food- and fairytale-inspired fashions hit Milan runway

Sandwiched between London and Paris fashion weeks, Milan’s autumn/winter ready-to-wear collections brought a delicious dose of cool to the table. For the past week, designers dished up the most enviable of cold-weather trends — their inspiration rising from the depths of centuries-old fairytale books to the height of McDonald’s golden arches.

Age and attitude: What accounts for alcohol abuse?

Predictably, as March approaches, news outlets will start releasing “shocking exposés” revealing the “dark side of Spring Break” as if we didn’t know drunken college students fall off balconies in Panama City every year. Trend writers would have you believe all students view Spring Break as a weeklong free-for-all, and while this isn’t necessarily true — we have Habitat for Humanity and other things to do, after all — it’s true that alcohol abuse is a pervasive problem in American university culture.

Trophy Hunting: super-sized Academy Awards predictions

The past year in cinema is seen by many as one of the tightest races in Oscar history, and with the variety of powerful performances up for Hollywood’s biggest honors, this movie-goer agrees in full. Lupita, Matthew, Chiwetel, Alfonso — so many names, so little trophies to distribute. To close out the 2014 award season (and subsequent Trophy Hunting coverage this semester), I’m tackling six of the biggest categories in Tinseltown’s most coveted ceremony and casting my votes for the year’s biggest frontrunners. Note: I am not all-seeing. I may not get this right. If I do, then I will celebrate accordingly. If I don’t, I will probably still celebrate accordingly. It is the Oscars, after all…
