In her first match at a major college tennis tournament, Jo Mather lost against Stephanie Davison of Texas 6-4, 6-2 in the pre-qualifying round of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. Mather also partnered with Anastasia Revzina in doubles play but lost in the opening round to Texas Christian's Nina Munch-Soegaard and Maria Babanova 8-5.
The UF women's tennis team kicked off its season with the Gator Fall Classic tournament. Three players reached the semifinals, and Anastasia Revzina reached the finals before losing to Notre Dame's Kristy Frilling 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8).
For most freshmen at UF, the transition from high school takes at least a semester. For Joey Burkhardt and Carlos Cueto, the transition period lasted three weeks.
The UF women's tennis team starts its individual tournament circuit today with five players and room for improvement. Last year's squad finished the season ranked No. 5 in the nation but was barely inched out in the Southeastern Conference Championship by Georgia 4-3.
