Brown

A homeless man was arrested Monday afternoon after he stole a cash register from a convenience store in downtown Gainesville.

Gainesville Police said Richard Lamar Brown Jr., 23, of Gainesville, went to Downtown Convenience, located at 40 SW Second St., at about 6:50 a.m. Monday, and used a brick to break the glass front door and enter the store, according to the arrest report.

Brown tried to use the brick to open the cash register but failed. He then took the cash register and left with the about $250 inside. The register itself was worth about $350, according to the report.

Brown was later identified by video surveillance. When contacted by an officer, Brown was wearing the same clothes as he was in the video, according to the report.

Police also connected a burglary at Triangle Club, located at 1005 SE Fourth Ave. on Sunday. At about 1:20 p.m., Brown entered the conference center through a service window because the store was locked, according to another GPD arrest report.

Brown broke open the cash register and took the $50 inside of it. He also took about $4.50 from the tip jar, according to the report.

Brown was arrested and charged with burglary and larceny. He was taken to the Alachua County Jail where he remains, as of press time, in lieu of a $60,000 bond.
