Today marks the 29th annual Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day, benefiting the Alachua County Public Schools Foundation.

The two Gainesville Ben & Jerry's shops, located at 1638 W. University Ave. and 3773 S.W. Archer Road, will offer free ice cream from noon to 9 p.m.

Volunteers from UF organizations and other Gainesville community members will be scooping ice cream for tips to benefit Alachua County's public school programs and Project MASCOT, a mentoring partnership with UF. Last year, the foundation raised more than $3,000.

Free Cone Day will take place at participating Ben & Jerry's locations around the world. The company expects to hand out more than one million free scoops of ice cream.
