No one should be surprised at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's report on the recent Tasering of Andrew Meyer at UF.
Law enforcement agencies always circle the wagons and protect their own when questions about their actions are raised.
More troubling is UF President Bernie Machen's response. He has failed to see that what happened here is much larger than the ranting of an out-of-control student.
In fact, in excusing - even condoning - what the police did, he sends a deeply chilling message to the entire university community: Get out of line, and we will Taser you. We only want quiescent, pliant, conforming students. Get uppity, and we will turn you into a criminal.
