The column supporting the anti-gay marriage amendment is a disappointing rehash of illogical arguments.
If Burwell wants to "show compassion" to our homosexual brothers and sisters, then he should stop fighting against their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. All gay marriage advocates want is for gay couples to enjoy the legal rights and benefits that come with marriage. After all, marriage is a legal institution controlled by the government. Speaking of which, there is no law stating that married couples have to procreate. Should the marriage certificates of infertile heterosexual couples be revoked?
Also, I take offense to Burwell's use of the plural pronoun "we" when referring to his opinion as a Catholic Christian. He does not represent the opinions of all Catholics, especially the millions of gay and lesbian Catholics, nuns and priests included, who suffer from the Roman Catholic Church's divisive policy on this issue.
The Catholic Church can pretend that gay marriages are not real, but they are. Spain, one of the world's most Catholic nations, legalized gay marriage in 2005, and the majority of Spaniards support the law because they are acutely aware of the injustices of religious bigotry.
I want to know what the UF Catholic Student Fellowship does about pressing social justice issues such as protesting the war in Iraq and fighting the inequitable distribution of wealth in the United States - issues more closely attuned to Jesus Christ's activist message than fighting gay marriage.
