Waleszonia looks to spark offense in series against Georgia

The Gators' high-powered offense is proving that pitching isn't the only thing that wins games.

No. 3 UF (43-2, 15-1 Southeastern Conference) heads into this weekend's series with No. 17 Georgia (35-13, 8-6 SEC) outscoring opponents 259-49 on the season.

While the home runs draw most of the attention, the Gators' version of murderer's row starts right at the top of the order with UF's career batting average leader.

"When I'm up to bat, they're not really worried about me," said junior Kim Waleszonia, who has hit leadoff for over two years now. "They're worried about what's below me."

Through 45 games, Waleszonia has used that protection to match the .368 batting average - the second-highest mark in school history for a single season - she posted as a sophomore.

Waleszonia said that hitting at the top of a high-scoring offense has provided her with the opportunity to see more pitches to hit.

An increase in pitches to hit has translated to more times on base and more opportunities to score for Waleszonia, as well as more victories for the Gators.

The high-energy leadoff hitter has reached base at a .436 clip while scoring 37 runs, tied for the most on the team with freshman Aja Paculba, who hits immediately after her in the lineup.

"Stereotypically, the leadoff hitter is supposed to see a lot of pitches and have a good eye," Waleszonia said.

While she said she is sometimes too aggressive and doesn't take the amount of pitches a normal leadoff batter would, Waleszonia tries to bring something a little more intangible to the team on an everyday basis.

Before every at-bat, she goes through a routine of multiple stretches and explosive jumps in the on-deck circle, culminating in a walk to the plate with fast-paced rock music blaring over Pressly Stadium's speakers.

"It brings some energy to me, and I try to push that energy off to my team," said Waleszonia of getting herself pumped up before at-bats.

This weekend, the rest of the Gators will look to their veteran sparkplug to get them going against the sixth currently-ranked team they have played so far this season.

Georgia comes into the series on a five-game losing streak and will be hungry to pick up a victory against SEC East rival UF.

Just like she does every game, Waleszonia will do her best to motivate her team and extend its 16-game winning streak.

"All that routine stuff is to bring energy to the game and to my teammates," Waleszonia said.
