Cyclist hit by car, taken to Shands

An unidentified 21-year-old male cyclist was taken to the hospital after being hit by a car on Thursday night.

GPD officer Sandy Teasley said the victim was being transported to Shands at UF with minor abrasions, but there was blood on the bicycle.

The cyclist was crossing the intersection of Southwest 1st Avenue and Southwest 13th Street when he was hit by a silver Mitsubishi Galant, driven by SFC junior Frank Davis, while it was turning onto Southwest 13th Street.

Davis said he pulled up to the stop sign at the intersection and backed up after pulling too far beyond the sign.

He then looked both ways and proceeded to turn right into the right lane of Southwest 13th Street, he said.

His front right bumper hit the cyclist, he said, and he heard a crash and a loud scream.

GPD are still investigating the accident.
