Monopoly fans join to attempt record-breaking rounds

Today, playing Monopoly isn't just about entertainment.

For some, it's the chance to be part of a new world record.

Gainesville Monopoly fans, as well as fans worldwide, will unite in an attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the most people playing Monopoly simultaneously.

Players will gather at the Reitz Union south terrace, near Taco Bell, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. to play the game, while people from other cities around the world gather to play as well.

UF's chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, or PRSSA, will host the event, which celebrates the release of the new Monopoly Here & Now: The World Edition, released Tuesday.

"It should be a really unique experience," said Stacey Davidson, PRSSA's vice president of public relations.

Thirty Monopoly boards will be set up for people to play, and both classic versions and newer versions of the game, some of which include credit cards instead of paper money, will be used.

Participants will receive T-shirts and refreshments.

In order for Gainesville to be counted in the world record, at least 25 people must show up to play.

Players should commit to playing from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
