GPD requests funds for 20 new Tasers

Gainesville Police could soon receive $22,000 in funding for 20 new Tasers.

The request will be brought before the Gainesville City Commission on Sept. 18 by the Public Safety Committee.

"Only a certain number of officers have Tasers with them," said Commissioner Jeanna Mastrodicasa, the committee's chairwoman. "They don't have enough to cover each shift."

According to city documents, GPD currently has 36 Tasers, which officers started using in October 2007.

In April 2007, the committee made a similar recommendation to the commission, which authorized $60,000 to pay for 36 X-26E Tasers and necessary training.

The funding also covered holsters, cartridges, replacement batteries and digital audio and video cameras.

Each Taser costs about $815.

During a hearing at an Aug. 25 Public Safety Committee meeting, GPD gave a presentation that addressed training procedures and discussed the proper use of Tasers.

After the presentation, the committee voted unanimously to take the request before city commissioners.

Mastrodicasa said it is very likely this new request for 20 more of the Tasers will go through.
