With the Student Senate election about a month away, parties will begin interviewing potential student senators today.

Parties that have registered will hold interviews today, Monday and Tuesday for the fall election, which is Oct. 7 and 8.

Each party can register 47 candidates to fill Senate seats that represent living areas that are off-campus and on-campus, including family housing.

Both the Gator Party and the Orange and Blue Party will return this fall.

Gator Party President Luis Nobriga said Tuesday's Student Government open house attracted a lot of attendees. Everyone interested in SG was encouraged to interview with a party.

"We just want the most diverse pool we can get," Nobriga said. "Even if they're young, that's cool because they bring in perspective."

Students must present their Gator 1 cards to qualify. Parties will interview from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Reitz Union room 284, according to the SG calendar.

Applicants will receive a qualifying form to choose which party they want to run with, said Orange and Blue Party President Sam Miorelli.

Parties must submit their candidate roster by Tuesday night. Applicants will be notified about the selections shortly after.

Applicants not selected by a party can run in the election as independent candidates.

The parties have not released platforms because they are waiting to hear input from their candidates, but Miorelli said his party plans to address some similar platform points from spring.

"We've never run a fall campaign, but compared to other parties, I think we stand a good chance," Miorelli said.

Nobriga said applicants would not be judged on appearance, but they should dress to impress if possible.

"If they're serious about it, a suit," he said, referring to male candidates. "They really do want to make that first impression."
