Police arrest driver after car chase ends in crash

Gainesville Police arrested a teenager Sunday in connection with a car chase that ended when the car hit a tree, a Gainesville Police report stated.

At about midnight, Officer Mike Hall began to pursue a white Ford Mustang with an expired tag as it turned onto Northeast First Avenue from Northeast 13th Street, the report stated.

Hall was patrolling Northeast First Avenue when he spotted the car, GPD spokeswoman Summer Hallett said.

When Hall began to follow the car, he reported that the Mustang surpassed the speed limit and ran three stop signs, she said.

When the car tried to turn onto Northeast 18th Street, it skidded off the road and crashed into a tree, the report stated.

The front of the car had major damage, Hallett said.

The driver and front passenger left the damaged car and fled east on foot, while another passenger remained in the car, the report stated.

Police used a K-9 team to track the driver from the car and located the Mustang's driver, Joseph R. Webb, 17, at 2100 N.E. Third Ave., the report stated.

According to the report, Webb told police, "You got me, so just take me to jail."

He was arrested on charges of resisting an officer without violence and fleeing a police officer, the report stated.

The names of the passengers were not available, but neither one was arrested, Hallett said.
