A pregnant teenager driving a family member's SUV without permission crashed head-on into another car Monday night.
The crash, which happened in front of the Texaco station at 809 N. Main St., left the girl, 16, with minor mouth injuries and the other driver uninjured.
GPD Sgt. Barry Kays said police believed the girl had panicked when a family member saw her turn off their street and onto North Main Street in the silver GMC Envoy.
Kays said the SUV then accelerated and sped southbound in the northbound lane.
While turning toward the Texaco Station on the corner of Northeast Ninth Avenue, it crashed into a Dodge Intrepid head-on, Kays said.
The driver of the Intrepid, David Quarles, 26, said he had been driving to tutoring on North Main Street.
The SUV veered into his lane and "drove straight towards me and crashed," Quarles said.
Quarles was not injured, and the pregnant teenager, whose name was not available, was transported to Shands, Kays said.
The fronts of both vehicles were smashed in, and they were removed from the scene by tow trucks.
The car had not been reported stolen before the accident because the actual disappearance occurred minutes before the crash, Kays said.
The Alachua County Sheriff's Office will investigate the possibility of grand theft auto charges, Kays said.
