After a breakdown in negotiations, the two major Student Government political parties will not debate each other as planned.

The Orange and Blue Party and the Gator Party had agreed to debate each other at a Student Senate meeting two weeks ago, but neither party could agree on the terms.

The debate was scheduled for Monday at Turlington Plaza.

On Friday and over the weekend, however, the Gator Party attempted to change the location and form of the debate.

Michael Hoffman, Gator Party spokesman, said he contacted Orange and Blue Party Sen. Ben Cavataro to see if he would be willing to hold a two-on-two panel-style debate on the second floor of the Reitz Union with pre-approved questions.

These points were non-negotiable, Hoffman said in his e-mail to Cavataro.

Sam Miorelli, Orange and Blue Party president, said the demands were all different from what each party had originally agreed to, but he said the main reason his party could not agree to the Gator Party's terms was because of the location.

Miorelli said his party wanted to hold the debate at Turlington Plaza because more students would be able to watch.

"The point of a debate is to bring the ideas to the people," he said. "Where are all the students at UF? They're out at all the open areas of campus," he said.
