Women beat out men in BSU's Battle of the Sexes

Women reigned in the Black Student Union's Battle of the Sexes challenge Wednesday night.

The contest was the third event for the homecoming celebration kick-off week. More than 100 people attended the event at the Reitz Union Amphitheater.

Twelve female contestants and nine male contestants, all of whom are also contestants for the Black Student Union Homecoming court, competed in six events, with the female team winning 15-9.

Sauntel Richardson, Homecoming contestant coordinator, said the group is holding a Homecoming ball Friday night.

The positions - king, queen, duke, duchess, prince, princess, count and countess - reflect the year of school each student is in.

Voting will take place today and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Turlington Hall, and anyone with a Gator 1 Card can vote, said Le'Asia Lundy, a spokeswoman.

The theme of the ball is "Jungle Allure," and the dress code is formal/semi-formal, Lundy said.

"I will not be dressing up in jungle attire, but I may wear a mask or something that reflects the theme," she said.

The ball is free and open to everyone.

Devon Vickers, a UF freshman, said she is running for the Homecoming court because she wants to meet new people at UF.

Richardson said this year is special because it is the first time BSU will not be having a separate homecoming celebration from the rest of UF in seven years, she said.

She said in the past, black students have gone home for Homecoming because they did not feel like they were a part of the event.

"Instead of having one week this year, we are having a celebration for UF's Homecoming," Richardson said. "We want to integrate into UF's Homecoming."
