Vandals soap up shopping center fountain

During the past few months, a fountain at a shopping center on Newberry Road has bubbled over more than 50 times after soap was poured into it.

Lt. Keith Kameg said Gainesville Police think the same "bored teenagers" continue to vandalize the fountain at 3800 W. Newberry Road near the Regal Royal Park Stadium movie theater.

GPD officers uploaded a video onto YouTube of the most recent soaping on Oct. 4 in hopes that someone would see it and make the culprits stop, Kameg said.

The video shows two people putting soap into the water at about 10 p.m.

It costs property owners about $300 each time it's necessary to clean up the fountain, Kameg said.

Kameg said the suspects would not go to jail, but he would like them to do some cleanup to make up for lost time and money.

"Heaven forbid they pick up a hobby that's useful," Kameg said.
