Construction of new hall to displace parking

Even the most experienced UF students may carry a guide when they return for spring classes - a parking map.

The construction of Hough Hall, UF's new business graduate school next to Criser Hall, will cause UF to forfeit 118 parking spots belonging to faculty and staff, said Scott Fox, director of UF Transportation and Parking Services.

Hough hall, set to begin construction Jan. 5, will cause a massive domino effect to reassign parking spaces in several lots.

UF Vice President for Business Affairs Ed Poppell said the building should be completed May 2010 and be ready for use that fall. Poppell said the decision to build Hough Hall on the Criser parking lot is in line with UF's long-term campus plan: New buildings will go on surface parking lots.

He said the hall's location is ideal because it will be near other business buildings: Stuzin Hall, Matherly Hall, Bryan Hall and Gerson Hall.

Signs at lots that are changing decal zones will be switched during winter break. Fox said warning tickets will be given for a brief period at the semester's start for people who park in their old spaces.

Here is a summary of the upcoming campus parking shuffle:

• 23 faculty and staff car pool spots will be moved from near Criser Hall to the lot by Fletcher Hall and Sledd Hall just south of University Avenue (currently a Red 1 lot).

• Twenty-three All Red spaces in the lot near Graham Hall will become Red 1.

• To help compensate for the loss of All Red spots, 125 All-Decal spaces in the Bledsoe Drive West lot will be redesignated All Red.

• 105 gated spaces will be created by "virtually" gating Inner Road, Mallory Hall and the southernmost row of the Fine Arts lot.

• 17 Car Pool parking spots will be moved from the lot at Inner Road/Fine Arts building to the lot near Yulee Hall and Reid Hall.

• 81 Orange spaces will move from the parking lot near Inner Road, Fine Arts C and Mallory Hall to the lot near Yulee Hall and Reid Hall.

The 98 Red 1 spots in the parking lot near Yulee and Reid halls will go two places: 61 spots in the parking garage near Norman Hall will be change to Red 1, and 37 spots in the surface lot in front of the Hume parking garage will now be Red 1 instead of All Red.
