Gainesville residents don't go nuts over Salmonella scare

Some people around the country might be up in arms over the latest salmonella scare, but it turns out some Gainesville residents aren't nuts about pistachios anyway.

The Food and Drug Administration announced Monday that a California-based food-processing plant will recall up to 1 million pounds of roasted pistachios that may be contaminated by salmonella.

Local grocery stores are dealing with the potential problem by removing pistachio products from the shelves.

Ward's Supermarket natural foods manager Russ Welker said Ward's pulled all pistachio products, packaged or fresh, Tuesday.

"We went through and pulled everything we could find," he said.

Welker said he doesn't expect Ward's' business to drop as a result of the crisis.

"It's a pretty minor part of the grocery food chain," he said.

There have been no complaints from customers so far, Russ said.

Ward's will keep the products to help with possible tracing efforts.

The Gainesville chains of popular ice cream stores Cold Stone Creamery and Ben & Jerry's are both pistachio-free, carrying neither pistachio ice cream nor pistachios as toppings.

Amira Dallal, 32, said she bought pistachios from a Gainesville Farmer's Market vendor once or twice in the past but usually buys almonds and won't be affected by the pistachio problem.

"It's not a big deal," she said. "A nut is more or less a nut to me."
