Two UF international students reported they were mugged and beaten by five to six men early Sunday morning.
The mugging was the second that evening in the Midtown area.
The two students had been drinking and were walking in the 1800 block of University Avenue after visiting bars, said Lt. Keith Kameg, Gainesville Police Department spokesman.
"They were kicked and punched and one of the guys had a gold chain stolen," Kameg said.
Nothing else was reported stolen, he said.
The incident happened around 3 a.m. but was not reported until about 8 a.m., likely because the students had been drinking, Kameg said.
One student is a 22-year-old Polish man, and the age of the other male student was not identified.
"Our criminals are looking for people that are either intoxicated or alone," he said.
As a result of the recent robberies, GPD has increased its patrols in the area, he said.
"Unfortunately, we have some people in our community that they have now taken to robbing people for sport," he said.
