Six-car pile up sends 6 to hospital

Traffic was backed up for a painful two hours after one driver's faulty accelerator caused a six-car pile up at 1600 N Main St. at 12:10 p.m. Tuesday.

Burnette Ferguson, 75, was driving south on North Main Street in the right lane when she said her accelerator got stuck, causing her to speed up to about 50 mph, according to a Gainesville Police report.

Ferguson was unable to stop and rammed into four cars, one of which ran into a fifth, and flipped her vehicle onto its back, according to the report.

Gainesville Fire Rescue workers had to remove Ferguson from the wreckage using the jaws of life. Her injuries were not found to be life-threatening, according to the report. Five people were taken to Shands at UF for additional care.
