I wanted to let the Alligator know how Southwest Recreation Center is keeping students’ personal belongings safe.
I just had my wallet stolen out of my locker this afternoon. You’re probably wondering how someone gets a wallet stolen out of a lockedlocker.
Well, the gym is providing members with locks and keys that have duplicates. In the past semester, I have, on accident, opened at least two locks that did not belong to me with my own issued key. I quickly realized these weren’t my belongings and locked it back up. I remembered thinking to myself that this could become a problem if the gym did not fix the issue. Unfortunately, it seems that I am the first victim. I came back after working out and found that my wallet, which was inside the locker on top of my backpack, was now missing, although my cell phone and keys were spared. I am 100 percent positive my wallet was in the locker because I had just put my Gator 1 Card back in it after renting the lock. I asked to speak to a supervisor, and I was told, “Thefts happen, and it is not Southwest’s responsibility.”
After filing a police report, I was told the same thing. This drives me crazy because it completely defeats the purpose of providing locks to safeguard your belongings if other students have access to the lock. I am now missing my driver’s license, two credit cards, my Social Security card, AAA card, health insurance card and $37, all because of Southwest’s negligence. You can rest assured that I will be bringing my own lock from now on, however I thought the rest of UF should know about the crummy locker system.
