Bill Cervone's statement clearly indicates that he believes police officers can, in the name of self-defense, shoot any person in their presence armed with a possibly deadly weapon - such as a cane, which is hardly different from a table leg - and wielding it in a dangerous manner.

This is unbelievable. Using such logic, one could shoot an ornery elderly person shaking his cane at kids on bicycles.

It would be nice to assume that we would hold police officers to a higher standard than this.

The vast majority of police officers are selfless, honorable people with a strong intention of protecting others and promoting justice.

However, what happened here was clearly more than just a tragic accident.

Fault ought to lay with one party, and it is fairly clear that Officer Smith crossed several legal and ethical lines.
