‘Chain reaction’ causes 14-car pileup on interstate

An estimated 14 cars crashed on Interstate 75 Monday, leaving one person critically injured and several others requiring immediate medical treatment.

It is unsure how the crash first occurred, said Lt. Steve Maynard, a spokesman for the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, but it wasn’t just one accident.

“It was like a chain reaction,” he said. “More accidents continued to happen after the original crash.”

Multiple semi-trucks were involved in the accident, he said.

The accident occurred just north of the 390 mile marker on the northbound side of the interstate.

All three lanes were blocked by the accident, though at 4:45 p.m., the sheriffs were able to unblock two of the lanes, Maynard said.

UF student Cassandra Watkins, who commutes daily using County Road 241, was delayed as a result of the accident.

Watkins said it took her much longer than usual — an hour and 45 minutes — to make it back to her house.
