Throughout campus the topic of block tuition has been present in various events and recent conversations. However, what has been lacking from these conversations is how block tuition will affect students after college.

By implementing block tuition, taking any fewer than a student is basically forced to take 15 credits, as taking any fewer would be a waste of money. As a working student, the usual question came up: Where am I going to get the extra money? As an art history major, another thought came up: What will my resume look like if I only have classes padding it?

When employers are looking for internship candidates, they can get hundreds of applications with the same basic education, similar classes and overall average GPA. What they use as a determining factor is the activities the candidates have done outside of the required education.

By spending my time taking 15 credits a semester, I wouldn’t be able to dedicate as much time to the organizations that could set me apart from my peers. In the end, I might graduate faster, but my resume would resemble a sad minimalist painting.

I urge everyone who cares about their careers after college to attend Wednesday’s rally on Turlington Plaza at 12:30 p.m. to sign a petition and say no to block tuition.
