Freshman Olivia Janowicz was unable to complete her run at a title

at the Freeman Memorial Championships on Sunday as she lost to

Maria Sanchez of USC in straight sets.

The Gators’ talented rookie (ranked No. 22) faced her toughest

opponent of the season in No. 3 Sanchez, a senior with plenty of

experience in big time situations.

Janowicz showed well, but fell to Sanchez 6-3, 6-0.

“She played great tennis from the first day to the last day,” coach

Roland Thornqvist said. “She got outplayed today but Maria is

clearly one of the nation’s better players.”

However, in doubles action, Janowicz and Alex Cercone picked up a

good win over Stanford’s pair of Carolyn McVeigh and Stacey Van

(8-2).

other action, No. 30 Joanna Mather defeated No. 74 Micaela Hein of

Arizona State (6-2, 6-2) and No. 28 Cercone fell to Hein’s

teammate, No. 34 Kelcy McKenna (7-5, 6-4).

was happy with the way Alex played as well, particularly in

doubles,” Thornqvist said. “She played well, but not quite well

enough to win.”

Thornqvist said all three of the team’s freshmen could improve

their strength and conditioning in order to take their game up a

notch.

Mather and Lauren Embree played a tough match against North

Carolina’s No. 8 pair of Shinann Featherston and Lauren McHale, but

lost 8-6.

The men’s team was officially eliminated on Sunday at the

Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships as Sekou Bangoura Jr.

and Alexandre Lacroix both lost their quarterfinals matches.

Following a three-set victory on Saturday, Bangoura faced a tough

opponent in Tennessee’s John-Patrick Smith, who was ranked No. 1 in

singles for much of the 2010 season.

Smith proved why he was named a 2010 ITA All-American and the 2010

SEC Player of the Year by quickly taking down Bangoura 6-2,

6-1.

No. 4 Lacroix was surprisingly upset by No. 53 Wil Spencer of

Georgia in straights sets (6-1, 6-3).

The top-seeded duo of Lacroix and Nassim Slilam also lost their

doubles quarterfinal match against against Tennessee’s pair of

Smith and Boris Conik, who will play in the doubles finals on

Monday.
