October starts in just a couple of days, and you can feel it in the air as UF students prepare for a month of candy, costumes and...community service.
Opportunities for volunteering abound next month, and this is a preview of what will probably be a couple of the biggest community service events for October.
One of the biggest events will be the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Oct. 22. If you are interested in joining a team, creating a team or donating, you can log on to the event website and follow the instructions.
While on the website, make sure to check out all of the different teams who have in total raised $26,140 for the American Cancer Society so far.
Registration for the event starts at 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 22 and the walk starts at 9 a.m. in downtown Gainesville.
If you're looking for another event earlier in the month, you can join forces with the Alzheimer's Association for the Walk to End Alzheimer's.
The walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Village at Haile Plantation. Registration will be open that morning at 8 a.m. and the walk will start at 9 a.m.
This event is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research. Volunteers are able to register online, start a team with family and friends, and come up with creative methods to raise money for the walk.
For more information, visit the event website and follow the instructions to sign up.
Again, this is a mere preview of just two of the volunteering events taking place in October. For a full schedule, you may want to look at local Gainesville newspaper websites and search their monthly calendars to see what other events will be going on.
