The project is the latest work of Mindful Messages: A Mural Movement, a nonprofit organization painting murals with uplifting, unifying messages in schools across Alachua County.
The decision to close schools was met with disapproval from board members Leanetta McNealy and Janine Plavac, who voted against the school closures.
The current maps propose the closure of Williams, Foster, Irby and Alachua Elementary Schools. The school board is scheduled to vote on the maps at a special meeting Thursday.
The original maps propose the closure of up to five elementary schools: Alachua, Rawlings, Foster and Williams Elementary Schools, and Duval Early Learning Academy, a pre-K through kindergarten school.
In a meeting lasting over four hours, the board selected its favorite of the maps and requested modifications before a March 3 meeting.
