Alachua County School Board requests redrawn elementary, high school maps

The six-week program provides students from seventh to 11th grade the opportunity to intern with local businesses around Gainesville. The goal is to provide students with the skills necessary to succeed in the workforce.
The district provided updated maps Wednesday. While the new maps further distinguish zoning for certain neighborhoods, they offer little change to proposed closures.
The Newberry Community School Board met Monday to discuss enrollment rates and transportation plans for the new school.
About 50 community members gathered at Westwood Middle School for the district’s final community input meeting Wednesday.

Alachua County Public Schools finished its second week of community input meetings to gather feedback on its rezoning initiatives Thursday.
For some community members, concerns over the rezoning aren’t specific to the closure of just one school, but rather a pattern of closures across East Gainesville, which is home to Porters Quarters and other historically Black neighborhoods.
Elected officials throughout Alachua County met at the Alachua County Public Schools District Office Board Room Friday to discuss the school district’s rezoning initiatives following the first week of community input meetings.
The maps, released on Monday, reveal that up to four elementary schools may close throughout the district. Three middle schools may convert to kindergarten through eighth grade schools to accommodate these changes.
