Police arrested a Gainesville man on suspicion of setting his apartment on fire after a blaze started Tuesday night.

The fire broke out at 115 SE 8th St. around 7:30 p.m. No one was hurt in the fire, Gainesville Fire Rescue District Chief Jeff Lane said.

The blaze was put out by a nearby resident, Toccara S. Carter, who rushed to help when another neighbor told her about the fire. When Gainesville Fire Rescue responders reached the one-bedroom apartment, they found residue from a fire extinguisher.

The couch and carpet were burnt and there was smoke damage to the rest of the apartment. Lane said no neighboring apartments were damaged.

Police have not released the 64-year-old man's name while the matter is being investigated. Gainesville Fire Rescue ruled the fire as suspicious.

"We don't see a lot of intentional fires," Lane said.
