Sara is a journalism senior at UF. She is currently serving as The Alligator's race and equity reporter, and previously served as the first amendment reporter, in Spring 2026. Before transferring to UF, Sara earned her Associate of Arts in Mass Communications/Journalism from Miami Dade College, where she served as staff writer for The Reporter. She grew up in France and aspires to return there and work as a journalist after graduating.

East Gainesville schools continue to face severe underenrollment

According to data from the 2025-26 school year, some Alachua County Public Schools in East Gainesville were well below capacity. The Duval Early Learning Academy was less than one-third full as of February 2026, enrolling just 119 students of its 408-student capacity. Lake Forest Elementary School is just over 40% full, filling about 250 seats of its nearly 600-student capacity.

Residents debate East Gainesville’s needs as city invests millions in new infrastructure

A nearly mile-long multiuse trail in East Gainesville was completed this summer as part of the city’s push to develop infrastructure in the region. Since the creation of the Gainesville Community Reinvestment Area in the early 2000s, the city has invested millions of dollars into its east side, which is home to several historically Black neighborhoods and has often gone underdeveloped and underfunded. The multiuse trail is intended to create more opportunities for lower-income residents by connecting homes, jobs and schools.

Gainesville is eyeing $3 million in state housing funds. Experts say it’s not enough.

Gainesville could receive more than $3 million in state housing funds over the next three years, with the official number coming in May. The funds would go toward expanding down payment assistance, home rehabilitation and foreclosure prevention programs for low‑income residents.

James Fishback attends UF College Republicans’ meeting despite the club’s ongoing conflict with UF

New Tom Petty mural in the works on 34th Street after former version painted over

An independent artist is now dutifully recreating the original Petty mural, which is expected to be completed by Friday.

The Florida Board of Governors recently developed and distributed a revised Introduction to Sociology syllabus and textbook that eliminate entire units on race, gender, and social inequality and modifies the remaining material to align with state statutes.
