Jason Wu, Alexander Wang and others set the pace for Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, more famously and simply known as New York Fashion Week, started Thursday. Some of America's favorite designers like Jason Wu, Lacoste and Alexander Wang showed their Fall 2012 ready-to-wear collections.

While Jason Wu's Target collection was being ransacked all across the nation, the designer was getting ready to debut his Fall collection, which was inspired by his Asian identity. He asked himself: How does a Chinese do China?

The result was beautiful pencil skirts, skinny jeans and heavy coats with fur lines and quilted embroideries, all inspired by militaristic uniforms. The bulkiness, which I use lightly, does not neglect the female figure — something Wu is known for.

Alexander Wang, the young and hip designer of high fashion, left his usual youthful approach and took a mature step forward with a white-and-black dominated collection. The designs feature a lot of leather — either as an entire silhouette or pieces woven into the garment. The one below features a look with leather on the collar and the backward "L" shaped motif going vertically down the shirt.

French sportswear brand Lacoste (and possibly the other sportswear brands) has been under a lot of pressure because this is a great opportunity to create stylish looks for Olympic attendees to wear this summer in London. The main feature of the looks feature two-tone leggings that are embellished with layers of "pull-over" wear, like sharp-fitting hoodies, skirts, dresses and quilted jackets.

Leaving the very modern designs of Wang, Wu, and Lacoste, Band of Outsiders' creative director Scott Sternberg was inspired by a recent trip to Mexico City. The end result was a collection that quite frankly looks pretty au natural. The earth tones and nude colors are very minimal, while some of the black flowery pieces are as embellished as the looks gets. The collection was a contrast to the other modern and leather embellished ones.

The above-mentioned designers are just some of the few that were debuted their fall collections. "Project Runway" winner Christian Siriano's collection is a nice take on modernizing the vamp with black, gray and dark red silhouettes that mix soft, flowy materials with leather — an amazing mixture of hard and soft.

While David Beckham has been strutting his stuff on recent H&M commercials for his underwear line, wife Victoria Beckham created a collection of long-lined dresses with high collars and v-necks.

New York Fashion Week will end on Thursday, but the other fashion capitals — London, Milan and Paris — will follow suit, so drop those JCPenney or Urban Outfitters catalogs for a bit and hit Vogue or Style.com to view the recent runway looks and start viewing the upcoming trends.
