Update:

A missing elderly Gainesville man with dementia was tracked down after he showed up alone in Lake City on Tuesday night.

Gainesville Police sent out a statewide alert Tuesday afternoon that John P. Mashburn, 70, was missing. The department received a call at 10:30 p.m. that Mashburn walked in to the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital in Lake City, about 45 miles north of Gainesville.

GPD Cpl. Angelina Valuri said nobody knows how Mashburn ended up so far away.

“He showed up and walked in and was saying he took a Greyhound,” Valuri said. “Then he said he took a shuttle, which isn’t possible. Nobody knows. He has dementia, so it’s difficult to figure out.”

Mashburn was reported missing around noon Tuesday after he walked out of the Veteran’s Affairs Community Center at 620 NW 16th Ave.
