Browsing the Internet and downloading apps just got a whole lot faster for Gainesville residents and UF students.

AT&T announced Tuesday that their 4G LTE network went live throughout the city.

Company spokeswoman Michele Money-Carson wrote in an email that the network service will be available for about 40 compatible devices such as tablets and smartphones.

AT&T now joins Verizon Wireless, which expanded its own 4G LTE network last year, in providing the service throughout Gainesville. LTE, which stands for long-term evolution, will speed Internet surfing and downloading up to 10 times faster than 3G, according to the AT&T’s website. Gainesville AT&T stores have been anticipating the launch.

“We’ve been waiting for a while,” said Shannon Coe, assistant store manager at the AT&T store at 6110 NW Fourth Place. “We’re real excited that it’s here.”

Kyle Beckman, a 20-year-old biology junior, has noticed faster downloads on his iPhone 5.

“Browsing and downloading, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are faster,” he said.
