Hop into the Miami hipster scene

Miami is a hotspot for any traveler. It offers beautiful beaches, booze and a check off the ol' tourist destination list. So, how about the people who have already been to Miami and are ready to experience a different side of the one dimensional tourist outlook? I can offer you that "new world" in Miami by taking you through the looking glass of the Miami hipster culture.

The hipster scene in Miami tends the follow the same markers as any other: tight pants, PBR and a lot of tattoos. Every now and then we come across some gems in Miami you know the places that aren't just full of hipsters, but actually a naturally hip place.

As a Miami native, I dare you to come join me in this adventure through Miami hipster wonderland and visit if you dare leave your comfort zone. Here are a few of the best bars in Miami and events to take part in with all the naturally hip people like me and you.

Gramps

Many of my friends find this place to be a stable of their nights out in Miami. Not only does it offer a cool atmosphere for you to show off your tattoos, but it also offers a '70s appeal that cannot be reached anywhere else. Their stage is decorated with what looks like paper mache sculptures and if you have ever seen the movie Yes Man this is exactly the kind of place that Zooey Deschanel's band could find an audience.

The bartenders know what they dosing and you may even fall in love with them (this may or may not have happened to a close friend).

As a self described place for "general shenanigans" (found on their YELP page), this bar and tavern is a great start on your journey through the rabbit hole.

Wood Tavern

Now this bar seems to be the heart of the Miami hipster bar scene. Wood draws large crowds for the small brews and the taco truck that sits in the backyard of the bar. Wood is self described as a "bar's bar" and "laid back n' local," who wouldn't want to take part in that atmosphere. Even the description sounds cool. There are live performances, but mostly it is just a dj spinning indie techno or indie rock for our blessed ears. This place is a go to for anybody, not just the naturally cool. Take a walk out of your sports bar comfort zone in Midtown Miami and jump into the artistic and cool vibe of Wood Tavern.

The Corner

The Corner is where any great night planner ends their Wynwood bar hop. The Corner is open until 8 a.m. on Saturdays and 5 a.m. every other day of the week, I mean what? No where in Gainesville is open past 2 a.m. and nights seem to go by so fast. In Miami, your night goes through until the morning with this hip hotspot. Go to a Grand Central show and then drink here at the place that is described as a "bar with an old soul."

 Wynwood Art Walk

Wynwood is a section of Miami that most of the mentioned bars above are located in. In this area (north of Downtown and south of the Design District) used to be home to a lot of crime and seedy places, now there are more than 60 art galleries and art complexes that find their homes in Wynwood. Wynwood has become a place rich in culture and life. Wynwood Art Walk is a showcase of exhibits and collections every second Saturday of the month. There are also food trucks to ease your hunger as you visually feed your souls.

Grand Central

Grand Central is located in Downtown Miami, just south of Wynwood and an easy walking distance to some of the listed bars. Grand Central is a live performance venue that draws crowds from many walks of life. There have been performances from the Indie bands Animal Collective and Architecture in Helsinki that drew the PBR crowd and then there have been performances from A$AP Rocky and Afrojack. Though it is a little divey, the best part is that you can walk to The Corner or Gramps.

Full Moon Drum Circle

A Full Moon Drum Circle is an event held on Miami Beach at water's edge. Drummers and fire twirlers and dancers all come out to celebrate the full moon. Of course, people from all walks of life tend to be on the beach during this celebration. There are homeless people, drunk people, high people, but at the end of the night it is really just a celebration of nature and renewal as the full moon starts. This is definitely a prime event to fill your cooler full of PBR and watch the moon come alive.

Come down to Miami, it is a good 6-hour drive or bus ride on GMT Transport. Grab your PBRs and jump on into the hip Miami nightlife scene.
