The most awesome Disney songs in the history of ever

Four words accurately sum up my childhood, and unless you grew up under a rock, these four words probably represent your childhood, too: Disney movies and songs. Disney movies taught us what it means to be a princess, how to be tough, how to take care of others, and most importantly, they gave us amazingly catchy songs to sing over and over and over again. So, I’m going to share what I deem the top five Disney songs, based on melody, lyrics, moral lesson, the movie they’re from and voice quality.

  1. “The Circle of Life” from Lion King. It’s a beautiful song that can make anyone feel at peace with love, tragedy, death or any other problem life can throw. It talks about finding your place in the world- something more people need to think about. Sorry for getting a little philosophical, but this song reminds us that the world is an enormous place that we all simply have a place and purpose in- a very powerful lesson. Plus, the song is addictive. (I can listen to it on repeat for days straight, and I have.) I always cite the movie as my favorite when professors ask what my favorite movie is. And sometimes, I get weird looks, but usually, the whole class nods their heads in agreement. It’s hard to argue with the movie’s magic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwSKkKrUzUk
  2. “I’ll make a man out of you” from Mulan. Mulan is such a bad-ass in this song. She perseveres through her struggles to achieve greatness. Pretty great lesson. She lives in a time in which women can’t fight for their country and don’t have equal rights, but she doesn’t let that stop her. She does what she has to do to achieve her goal. Something we all need to remember. If you listen to it once, you’ll be singing it for weeks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSS5dEeMX64
  3. “Colors of the wind” from Pocahontas. As a child, I loved the movie, and I thought this song was beautiful. But it wasn’t until I was a teenager that I realized how amazing this song truly is. In a world where people are judged for their race, physical features, sexual orientation, gender and other things, this song serves as reminder to us all to look past outer appearances and stereotypes. The lyrics are so poetic; “you need to paint with all the colors of the wind.” One of my majors is English, and no matter how much time someone gives me, I will never come up with a line that beautiful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkV-of_eN2w
  4. “Won’t say I’m in Love” from Hercules. OK, so this song’s message isn’t quite as strong as the others, but what it lacks in lesson, it makes up for elsewhere. It let us girls know what it’s like to be in love. When you’re truly in love, you’ll deny it until you’re blue in the face. You won’t say it. An important lesson about love. It’s also upbeat and is the kind of song you could listen to for five hours straight and still love. I’m speaking from personal experience on that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_bEWXs_FX4
  5.  “A whole new world” from Aladdin. This song teaches us the importance of finding someone who can show you new things and help you learn new things about yourself. Love should help you find “a whole new world. A whole new world for you and your special someone.” Also, their voices are amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZ1Rb9hC4JY

If you’re not already one of those college students who listens to Disney songs all the time, hopefully this will inspire you to become one of us. And if you do already listen to Disney songs, keep listening and keep being awesome.
