For whatever reason, cupcakes seem to be all the rage these days.
There are TV shows devoted entirely to these confectioneries, such as Cupcake Wars and DC Cupcakes. There are gourmet shops springing up in every city. And they come in almost every shape, size and flavor you can imagine.
Sarkara Sweets is a local cupcake shop located in downtown Gainesville. I’d heard good things about the place, so the cupcake-lover inside me was dying to give it a try.
Sarkara Sweets has a huge selection of predesigned cupcakes in mouth-watering flavors ranging from confetti to key lime pie to chocolate peanut butter. Or you can make your own custom cupcakes at the build-your-own bar. You can choose your flavor of cake, filling, frosting and toppings.
On my visit I ordered the green tea lemon, an unexpected yet delicious combination of flavors. My friends ordered red velvet chai and pumpkin pie, which were great as well. We sat at the tables outside, but there’s also spacious indoor seating and free WiFi for customers.
Sarkara Sweets has plenty of vegan-friendly and gluten-free options. There’s a vegan peanut butter banana bacon cupcake that’s definitely on my list to try next. I’m not vegan, but this one sounds too crazy and amazing not to try.
Sarkara Sweets has other treats in addition to cupcakes, such as cake pops, truffles, chocolate-dipped strawberries and candy. Also, cupcakes are sold at the POD markets on campus if you get a craving between classes.
