Die and go to gelato heaven

Gelato co
Gelato co

The Gelato Company, a small restaurant located in downtown Gainesville, is quite underrated, in my opinion. The eatery has an inviting and casual atmosphere (the exposed brickwork really adds charm and character), reasonable prices, late hours for those nights out, amazing homemade gelato and a delicious menu.

I stumbled across the eatery one night when I was downtown. I’ve had their gelato a few times since then, but I had never ordered food. I decided to go for lunch.

After asking for an employee’s suggestion on what to order, I chose the formaggio panini (dill Havarti, mozzarella, and parmesan cheese on focaccia bread). She said it would go well with the soup of the day: tomato bisque. Each entrée comes with your choice of two sides, so I opted for the soup and chicken salad.

The panini was like a fancy grilled cheese sandwich, and it paired perfectly with the tomato bisque. I was especially impressed with the chicken salad, which was light, flavorful and refreshing. Also, the portion size was just right. You get a nice variety without having to stuff yourself or take leftovers home.

If you’re planning to have dessert, you can get a free small gelato when you purchase a drink with your entrée. Although, it’s difficult to make a decision with a selection of around 10 to 20 mouth-watering flavors made fresh daily.

I didn’t get gelato on this particular visit, but it is absolutely delightful. The unique flavors are what make their gelato special. Some of the flavors include peanut butter marshmallow, Oreo cake batter, apricot almond, avocado banana, pistachio, trail mix and chai.

The menu also offers salads, sandwiches, crepes, and coffee. Next time I come I’ve got my eye on a Nutella, strawberry and banana crepe.
