I imagine you have spent the majority of your life being told to keep things tidy. Organize the pantry. Clean your room. Leave your shoes at the door so you don’t track mud in. Now that you’re living by (mostly) your own rules, you can leave that all behind. You can be as dirty and messy as you’d like to be!

To celebrate this new autonomous and probably less hygienic lifestyle, I bring you the sloppy joe. I’m not talking about the ones that could possibly inspire horrific flashbacks to your elementary school days - I’m referring to the easy, breezy meal that gives you all the satisfaction of home without the cleanliness of it.

Your shopping list will include the following: ground beef, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and hamburger rolls. I’d hit up the condiment aisle first - another perk to this meal is that you’ll be stocked up on condiments for a long time after. Each bottle will run you between $2.50 and $4 depending on the brand and size. If you’re looking for a different flavor, you can substitute the ketchup for the barbecue sauce of your choice. Hamburger buns should cost you a little under $2. A package of ground beef should come to about $4. If you'd like, some onion can be a nice touch as well. Gather your groceries and hit up the kitchen!

Browning the ground beef is the first step. It shouldn’t take very long, so don’t take a Netflix break of anything. When it’s perfect (or close to it), add approximately 1 cup of ketchup, a half of a cup of mustard, and a quarter of a cup of Worcestershire sauce. It’s okay if these values aren’t measured exactly - it still comes out good, though sometimes saucier. Mix these all together and let the combination simmer for a few minutes. When you’re done, you are free to ladle it out on to your hamburger buns and indulge in your delightful little mess - you’ve earned it.
