New romance can be scary, especially going out with that new special someone for the first time. From deciding what the two of you want to do together to holding a decent conversation, first dates can be tricky. Will you like him or her enough to go out again? Will there be a connection? Or will you want to call the whole thing off?

Here are a few first date dos and don’ts to keep in mind when going out with that new guy or gal:

DO be open to new ideas, and be decisive.

Your new potential beau may not want to go the typical dinner-and-a-movie route for your first date. A homemade meal or a physical activity like bowling may seem like a better option. Be open to these different ideas, but stay away from the “I don’t know, what do you want to do?” conversation. Just go with your gut, pick a first date location, and take it from there.

DON’T drink too much

One or two glasses of wine will be fine, but things can get a little tricky when the alcohol takes over. The bad habits that you’d like to keep to yourself for now may make themselves known if you have too much to drink. More importantly, your date could be turned off by any negative behavior the alcohol triggers. Let loose and have fun, but just be conscious of how much alcohol you’re actually consuming.

DO have a positive attitude, but be prepared

The truth of the matter is: just because you go on one date doesn’t mean you’ll go on a second. Things don’t always work out the way they plan, but be prepared for an unknown outcome. If you go on the date with an open mind and a realistic expectation you’ll be happy if it works out and OK if it doesn’t.

DON’T talk about sex unless you want to have it

I think this one is a no-brainer. As great as sex can be, it’s imperative that you don’t rush into things because of the complications the intimacy can bring. Plus, leaving a little imagination for the future – or the second date – isn’t always a bad thing. But if you choose to go the sex-on-the-first date route, you should definitely talk about your sexual history.

A few other first date do’s and don’ts include:

DON’T talk about your ex

DO tell him or her about yourself

DON’T psychoanalyze everything he or she says

DO talk about things you’re passionate about

DON’T go to a second location if you’re not interested

DO break the stereotypical dating rules

And DON’T talk about your ex… seriously.

By remembering these tips, you’ll give yourself and your future beau a great chance at earning second-date potential.

Happy Dating!
