Overalls are back, no really

Calling all children of the ‘90s: Your unofficial grade school uniform is back in session! No, not the beaded socks, and you put down that hair scrunchie right now. It’s the short overalls that are enjoying a (however fleeting) fashion comeback.

The overall trend that’s sweeping the streets is one more ‘90s fad that fashion It-girls Alexa Chung, Tilda Lindstam and Anya Ziourova have been spotted in outside of scheduled runway calls.

And since the rest of us fashionistas are only too happy to follow suite, could the overalls’ encore simply be our next step down ‘90s memory lane? I mean, we’re already living in our mom jean cutoffs, flannel shirts, cropped tops and Keds. Overalls would be the most logical move to follow.

I know what you’re thinking. What could this extremely trendy piece actually go with in your closet? How does one rock the short overalls without the aforementioned beaded sock and scrunchie accessories?

But the surprisingly versatile garment works its way into a number of modern styles.

If you tend to channel the tomboy look, throw a pair of overalls on over a tank and layer with an open flannel shirt.

More of a flower child? The overalls easily transition into a bohemian look, too! Wear your short overalls over tights and a lacy top, and layer it all beneath a big comfy sweater when the temperature begins to drop.

If girly girl is still your scene, it’s all in the color. Grab a pair of overalls in muted pink, mint green, or sky blue for a touch of femininity that’s still steering clear of I’m-five-years-old territory.

If you’re thinking overalls don’t lend enough of a rebel status to your cause, get inspired by the always on-point stylist Anya Ziourova. She rocked the ‘90s trend in a pair of black pleather overalls over a graphic long-sleeved T-shirt. When in doubt, accessorize it out, and throw on a statement necklace!

So if you’re already on board the ‘90s train, why not push your style limits past your regular comfort zone? Hop on down to the always on-trend Forever 21 or H&M for an inexpensive overall option. If you find the trend a happy addition to your wardrobe, invest in a nicer pain from Urban Outfitters or Topshop.
