Santa Fe College Senate holds debate for student candidates

Santa Fe College senators passed several bills and held a debate for Student Government election candidates Wednesday night.

Santa Fe President Jackson Sasser briefly visited the meeting to talk to students about second lady Jill Biden and Undersecretary of Education Ted Mitchell’s visit Monday.

He also urged senators to ensure they’re representing their constituents effectively.

“We are free here,” Sasser said. “This body is free to do what you want. That’s government. I’m just encouraging you as you move forward to represent students and not just personal interests.”

Student Body presidential candidate Conor Flynn, vice presidential candidate Hannah Gwynn and treasurer candidate Justin Deese participated in a debate.

Flynn and Gwynn expressed a strong desire to better represent students, not push their own agendas and to get rid of the “drama” within Student Government that has occurred over the past few months.

“I feel that for Student Government to work efficiently, we have to hear of issues of the students,” Flynn said.

Flynn and Gynn are running unopposed. Deese’s rival, Timothy Bergman, did not show up to the debate.
