When Patreis Young found out Student Government wanted her input on a campus issue, she was surprised.

“My first thought was ‘Finally, Student Government is asking for my opinion,’” the UF microbiology and cell science sophomore said.

SG sent out an email survey Wednesday afternoon asking students about their overnight study habits to determine future 24/7 spaces. The survey will close Oct. 27.

Student Body President Smith Meyers said he and SG Student Senate leadership decided to send out the survey after approving the SG budget June 30, when they cut Library West hours from 24/7 to 24/5 to fund Newell Hall’s 24/7 operation costs.

He said negative backlash from students after their decision reaffirmed the survey idea.

Young took the survey as soon as she saw it because she said she wants to make Library West 24/7 again.

“I love West,” the 19-year-old said. “They should’ve asked for our opinion before they changed the hours.”

It took a little more than three months for SG to coordinate the creation of the five-minute survey with different campus groups, Meyers said.

Smith said SG hopes the survey will show how much students need both spaces. He said SG will use the data to request funding from UF.

“I would love to see a lot of students come together to show the university they should pay for overnight hours, if that’s what they want,” Smith said.
