This burglar’s sweet tooth got him into a sour situation in the Reitz Union basement.

A Gainesville man was charged by University Police Saturday morning in connection to a burglary Reitz Union basement.

Algera Cornelius Lavan, 62, used a stolen key to enter the Reitz Union basement on Thursday shortly after 7 p.m., according to a police report. Video surveillance from the basement and the loading dock captured the incident.

Lavan stole approximately $70 of Aramark baked goods from the bakery area. At the time of the incident, Lavan was neither employed by UF nor Aramark, according to the report.

Lavan was charged with burglary of an occupied structure, a felony, and petit theft, a misdemeanor. He was released on his own recognizance on Sunday, but has been banned from all university properties.

Contact could not be made with Lavan as no contact information was listed in the police report. It is unclear whether he has an attorney. According to court records, Lavan has only been charged with traffic citations prior to this incident.
