UF freshman outside hitter Kira Hutson will be out for the rest of the volleyball season due to a shoulder injury.

Hutson experienced a season-ending labrum tear last year, resulting in further damage to her shoulder. The injury prevents her from hitting safely in the sport.

“I am currently trying to keep my head high because although my freshman year has not gone as planned, I still accomplished goals I had set for myself,” Hutson wrote in a Tweet. “I know the road to recovery will not be easy, but I am going to work my butt off so I can get back to doing what I love.”

The freshman hit a career-high 14 kills and 15.5 points against No. 8 Penn State. She recorded an overall 0.197 hitting percentage offensively and four total blocks defensively in her brief freshman season.

In high school, Hutson ranked as the No. 11 overall player in the country, according to PrepVolleyball. She was selected for the 2021 First Team All-State and First Team All-Area.

“I chose Florida because of the amazing coaching staff and the winning culture they have built,” Hutson said. “Along with having a winning program it has rigorous academics that will set me up for success in the future.”

The setback comes after All-American setter Alexis Stucky suffered a season-ending ACL and MCL tear against Wisconsin.

Florida will play its next game at p.m. Friday against Mississippi State in Starkville, Mississippi. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
