Just after midnight on Thursday night, a gun was found in the men’s bathroom at UF’s Broward Dining Hall.
Surveillance footage showed 21-year-old Kenyata McCoy, a dishwasher at the dining hall, walking into the men’s bathroom and then leaving 10 minutes later.
Another employee went into the bathroom after McCoy and found the gun, leading him to report it to his supervisor. Law enforcement later arrived on the scene.
McCoy had previously been arrested for illegally carrying a concealed weapon in 2021.
McCoy told police he saw the gun, picked it up and then put it back down but did not bring it into the bathroom, according to the arrest report.
Police found that the gun had been stolen during a car burglary in June 2020. McCoy had been arrested twice in July of that year, once for having a stolen vehicle and another time in connection with a string of car burglaries.
Police noted he was actively committing car burglaries when the gun was stolen.
According to the arrest report, he made a statement confirming he had the gun on UF property.
McCoy was arrested on Saturday afternoon on felony charges of possession of a firearm on school property.
He is currently being held at the Alachua County Jail with bond set at $10,000.
