Dear Campus Community,

As we start a new year, I want to take this opportunity to welcome you back to our beautiful campus and to encourage you to embrace the fresh chapter each January brings.

As you reflect on personal growth resolutions, I challenge you to make one simple yet powerful commitment to strengthen the safety of our campus community: A commitment to vigilance.

The Gainesville campus is large, open to the public and integrated into the city, which can create uncertainty about when to contact law enforcement regarding suspicious activity.

So, if something seems odd or you feel like you’re in danger, please do not hesitate to call the police. Your safety is our top priority.

To be vigilant also means making smart choices, such as:

Secure your belongings

The theft of unlocked and improperly secured micromobility devices — such as bicycles, skateboards, and electric scooters and bikes — is our most common call. I encourage you to speak with our officers on how to properly secure your devices and to take the time to register all of your property with UPD.

Be aware of your surroundings

Because our public campus is open to all, it is important to always be alert. Never prop open doors for strangers in areas that are only accessible by mobile credentials, such as your GatorONE identification or keyfob.

When traveling at night, walk through well-lit areas and, if possible, with someone you know. If you’re headed somewhere alone, share your destination with a friend and check in once you have arrived safely.

The GatorSafe app is UF’s all-in-one tool for campus security. Through the app, you can connect directly with a UPD dispatcher or submit tips anonymously. I encourage you to take advantage of other safety tools found within the application, which include the Work/Study Alone feature, Friend Walk and Mobile Blue Light.

With such a large campus, safety is a responsibility that must be shared by all. By challenging ourselves to be proactive and take supportive steps, we can help keep UF safe, secure and welcoming for everyone.

With appreciation,

Bart C. Knowles

University Police Chief
