Gators avoid shutout in loss to No. 1 Texas

Henry Jefferson was the only victor for Florida

Florida men’s tennis returned to the court for the first time in six days, ready to face its toughest battle: No. 1 Texas.

After securing their fifth shutout match victory of the season against Presbyterian College on Sunday, the Gators nearly fell victim to that same fate.

Despite starting the match off strong by keeping the doubles match competitive, Florida (14-12, 5-8 SEC) succumbed to the pressure and fell 4-1 to Texas (21-6, 12-2 SEC) on Friday in Austin, Texas.

To begin the dual match, the No. 9 duo of senior Tanapatt Nirundorn and junior Henry Jefferson looked to avenge Sunday's doubles loss to LSU. They battled hard and forced a tie-breaker set 5-5; however, they couldn’t proceed as their match was left unfinished.

The same could not be said of the other senior-junior duo, Pablo Perez Ramos and Adhithya Ganesan. As the No. 26 paired Longhorns crashed the service boxes and returned fast balls, Ramos couldn't get underneath the ball to answer with a proper return, and the ball fell just short, securing the first Texas win 6-4.

Wrapping up the doubles portion was the final senior-junior duo of Lorenzo Claverie and Kevin Edengren, as they fell 6-4 to No. 39 senior Sebastian Gorzny and freshman Lucas Marionneau. Numerous shots soared into the sky, granting Texas several points and the eventual win.

But even with an hour and a half between portions, due to a rain delay, the Gators ultimately could not find the solution to the Longhorns.

Although half of the courts took a first-set lead for Florida, that edge was not enough to bounce back. The third-ranked singles player, Gorzny, made quick work of No. 103 Ganesan with his 7-5, 6-0 straight set dominance.

Texas then quickly grabbed its third point as No. 32 freshman Kalin Ivanovski finished the No. 91 junior, Jeremy Jin, with a sharp 6-4, 6-2 victory.

As the remaining four courts needed to play near-perfect tennis, that hope would not last. Ramos took the first set with a 6-3 win, but was sent home as No. 109 freshman Abel Forge delivered a 6-1, 7-5 game-sealing act.

While the Gators lost, this match was the closest to being their first shutout of the season. But thanks to Jefferson, that didn’t happen. The Gator was the only successful player on the night, winning 6-1, 7-5 over senior Jonah Braswell.

Earning neither victory nor defeat was reserved for two Gators: Claverie and Edengren. The senior lost 7-6 (9-7) in the first and bounced back with a 6-3 middle set in part thanks to a bullet of an ace. The last set went unfinished, all knotted up at two apiece. Edengren’s match was reversed as he won 6-4 to open up his singles portion but then lost with the same score. Marionneau kept things tight as the match went unfinished, tied three all.
