Bradford County man arrested on cocaine charge following Gainesville traffic stop

Police found nearly 8 grams of cocaine inside the car

A man was arrested and charged with possessing cocaine with intent to sell following a Sunday night traffic stop, according to an arrest report.

Christopher Wilburn, a 52-year-old Hampton resident, was pulled over after an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputy noticed the vehicle he was driving had only one functioning brake light. During the stop, Wilburn told the deputy he didn’t have his driver’s license because it had been suspended.

The black Kia Soul Wilburn drove was registered to a different man in Hampton, Florida.

After searching the car, the deputy found three small bags of cocaine totaling 7.9 grams near the driver’s seat, according to the arrest report.

A further search of the vehicle revealed a digital scale and a backpack containing 20 empty small bags, according to the report.

Wilburn told the deputy there was a handgun inside the car that belonged to the vehicle’s owner. According to the report, Wilburn called the owner, who said he was unaware the weapon was in the car.

In addition to his cocaine charge, Wilburn was also charged with driving with a suspended license, possession of drug equipment and committing a felony while in possession of a weapon.

According to the report, Wilburn had been found guilty of driving with a suspended license twice in 2007.

Wilburn denied knowing about the cocaine, according to the arrest report. He was arrested at the scene, and the vehicle was towed before he was booked into the Alachua County Jail.
