After an impeccable pair of opening rounds, the Florida men’s golf team entered the final day of the NCAA Columbus Regional with a strong 12-shot lead.
Though a two-and-a-half-hour rain delay forced the Gators to tee off at 11 a.m, the inclement weather couldn’t stop history from repeating itself in Columbus, Ohio. Fueled by a 24-stroke lead and a career-best performance from individual champion Luke Poulter, Florida secured the 2026 championship title.
The victory marked another successful showing for the Gators, who also claimed the regional title in 2024 with Poulter winning the individual championship.
Florida kicked off the tournament claiming dominance in the first round, shooting a 7-under 277 to secure a 12-shot advantage after 18 holes.
Sophomore Parker Sands set the bar high recording a career-low 66 (-5) and taking first place in the solo ranking. Jack Turner followed, carding a 69 (-2) record that placed him solo second on the leaderboard.
Sands and Turner were the only golfers in the field to shoot in the red during the first round, inching Florida closer to success behind their efforts to stay under par.
With even-par 71s from Matthew Kress and Luke Poulter, the Gators closed out opening play as the only team in the tournament to finish under.
Leaning on an early advantage, Florida did everything right to hold its lead through the second day. The Gators shot even-par 284, improving to 561 (-7) after 36 holes.
Swanwick took the reins in round two, amassing a 69 (-2) and tying for the third place position. Fueling off the momentum, UF’s Poulter also closed out an under-par round with a 70 (-1) to secure a top position on the leaderboard.
The rest of the Florida team remained consistent as Turner, Sands and Kress all held steadfast in scoring positions.
Despite holding a significant advantage, the Gators played at their best in the final round.
Poulter secured the individual championship after shooting even par on day three. Sands and Kress extended the Gators' success, finishing in second place with Sands ending round three at 1-over and Kress at even par. Sands’ performance also marked his first career top-three finish.
Florida completed the tournament with a 24-stroke lead. The only team who was even par or better in Columbus, UF has positioned itself as one of the top programs in the nation heading into the national championship.
Next, the Gators will compete for the national championship title at Omni La Costa’s North Course in Carlsbad, California. Round one will commence on Saturday, May 29, where Florida will look to claim its second title in four years.
Stanford, Memphis, Arizona State and Florida State joined Florida as the five qualifying teams advancing from the Columbus Regional Championship.
